Alkaline Batteries

 

Non-rechargeable Alkaline Batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9V) are not hazardous.     Dispose with trash.

Rechargable Batteries

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation recycles the following hazardous battery types commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote control toys:

  • Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd),
  • Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
  • Lithium Ion (Li-ion)  but NOT Lithium*
  • Small Sealed Lead** (Pb)

Your town may have a collection box at its transfer station, and many retailers also have collection boxes, including Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Radio Shack, Sears, and Staples .

Automotive Batteries

* Small Sealed Lead and Automotive batteries are banned from disposal due to their lead content, and may have some scrap value.  If not accepted at your municipal transfer station, they may be brought to :

  • Conway Scrap Metal, 36 Vincent St., Whitman 781-447-2534 (paying $4/each in 8/2007)
  • Spiegel South Shore Scrap, 175 E. Ashland St., Brockton, 508-897-0008
  • Advance Auto Parts also accepts used automotive fluids
  • many service stations accept auto batteries
  • In conjunction with Earth Day (April 22), AAA holds their Great Battery Roundup with multiple collection points

** Seal spent lithium batteries in a dry plastic bag and bring to hazardous waste collection
